PERSONAL STATEMENT

I make a lot of motion graphics and movies for myself and I’ve done commercial work for Rimmel, Adidas, Carhartt, Uni-Qlo and Coca-Cola amongst others. I’ve built a few websites, including my own, www.richardboase.com, where you can find out more about me if you would like to.  I’ve just returned from Tokyo, where I was VJing for two years with TOKYO VJ and Lightrhythm Visuals, and my next goal is to work in a small commercial team in a professional studio in London, Paris, New York or San Francisco.

I’m very keen on developing business relations between European, American and Asian production houses, fashion brands, pop-groups, directors etc. Ideally, in future, I want to be doing project management or art direction for broadcast.

I can handle quite a lot of technical responsibilities on set (e.g. lighting, camerawork, direction etc.), and also editing and compositing off set. I am looking for an environment where I can be a useful, helpful member of the team, practice my skills and help move things along swiftly and neatly to meet deadlines under budget, and have some fun.

If you think you have some space for me, I’d like to meet you. Please look at my showreel here: http://www.tribeofe.net/opolis/RICHARD%20BOASE/mpeg_h264%20SR_2008.mov

BULBOUS CELL TOKYO (www.bulbouscell.com) Creative Director August 2007 – December 2007

I joined Bulbous in June 2007 after a short induction period. I acquired my first client for the studio in August and followed up in September and October.

Our client requested a large project on a very tight budget, which required us managing a team of five freelancers to deliver a DVD of the fashion show “Glamorous, Japan”. I organized a commercial shoot for Rimmel, London, - edited and presented it as part of a 5 hour visual show, hired cameramen to shoot the show, and then edited the final product onto DVD.

My duties at Bulbous Cell were initially as a motion graphics designer, but the managing director was keen that everyone in the company perform a range of different jobs, so I did sales and marketing too, and then project management.

I had to liase with clients to sell a range of media products like Customer Relationship Management systems, Content Management Systems, and services like Search-Engine Optimization.

My official title at Bulbous Cell was creative director, but I was responsible for a little bit of everything, including recruitment and lead generation. I also wrote treatments and selected and led the creative team.

I left in December 2007, when I moved back to London.

NOVA (Japan) Specialist in Arts and Humanities from June 2006 to June2007.

Nova employed me to teach business English for one year.  It was my responsibility to help their Japanese students communicate in a large range of business situations, in a range of industries and services, and I gained some good skills with them as an instructor. Each day, my duties were to talk simply and directly with professionals from medicine, architecture, education, leisure, sales and finance, and to ascertain the type of problems they encountered every day in the English speaking workplace, and guide them through.

My time there helped inform me of the wide range of issues that face working professionals and also gave me a lot of exposure to different character types in Japan.

I left in June 2007 to Join Bulbous Cell full-time.

KERB (www.kerb.co.uk) (Clients DOCOMO JAPAN, SONY JAPAN), BBC UK) Junior Designer from September 2005 to November 2005

Kerb asked me to complete a compositing project they had undertaken for a Japanese TV company. They had created a feature-length cartoon in Flash, and wanted to re-animate it in After-Effects, prior to the release of Flash 8. I oversaw the restructuring process and output to DVD.

AMOEBA (www.theestateovcreation.co.uk) (clients – MTV)

Scott McPherson from Amoeba was my first motion graphics mentor, and helped me direct my first motion graphics short.

NINJA TUNE (HEXSTATIC)

I did work experience with Ninja Tune in 1999 as a VJ because I wanted to learn VJing and find out the basics of making music videos.

SPUTNIK – (June 2003 – June 2004) My duties at Sputnik were design oriented for print. They were very retro and cool, a little place in Birmingham, but they unfortunately went out of business.

RED LIGHT MEDIA I did work experience (editing and directories) from June 2002 till June 2003) I started my career at the Red Light in King’s Cross London. Cataloguing their digi-beta tapes and reviewing their past works. I also had some experience with the AVID studio suite and the Media100.
